Heraclitus

Heraclitus of Ephesus is considered one of the most important pre-Socratic Greek

philosophers and   he was a native of the Greek city Ephesus. Even though many of his

writings are not around today, that does not make what we do have of his philosophy

any less important or relevant. He believed that all things were connected, especially

opposites like good and evil. One of his many quotes was that, “Opposition brings

concord: Out of discord comes the fairest harmony.” I believe the quote means that

without good there can be no bad and if there was nothing to balance the positive, then

people would not appreciate the good as much as we do. So, without good and bad

nobody would ever know right from wrong, in the same way that someone without

consequences will never learn that their actions are bad. For example, if there was no

jail or other negative consequences, crime would run rampant.
